The Importance of Protecting Our People

"It is tragic and horrible when vulnerable people, children in particular—instead of encountering life and health and hope and home, grace and affirmation in the life of the church—are harmed by ministers of the gospel. It is tragic, it is sobering, and it is something that invites us to repentance, individually and corporately, for the way we fail in this manner and we ask the grace and mercy of God upon us... It also underlines the importance of having good policies around the protection and safety of children and adults in the life of our churches and, in fact, to follow those policies. It is our job to the best of our ability to make sure that people are protected and are as safe as they possibly can be in the life of the church."

In light of the Archbishop of Canterbury's resignation earlier this week, Bishop Alex underlines the importance of the work that we, in the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Anglican Church in North America, have been doing this past year to update our policies and procedures for protecting children and vulnerable adults in all our congregations, and to ensure that those guidelines are diligently enforced.

He also comforts us with a reminder that, although we may not see justice accomplished perfectly in this world, "God, in the end, is always a God of truth and justice, and we can be assured that justice under him is always beautifully and perfectly served."
