Lent: We All Need a Stern Word

"But the truth is all of us—from time to time in our lives—need that stern word. The Scriptures are filled with warnings for the people of God. How we live our lives matters and has consequences. When Paul talks to the Ephesian elders, he gives them the whole counsel of God, not just the happy cheerful things, but the warnings and the challenges. So as we live in this season, we might feel a little self-conscious that perhaps the lessons are a bit grim or the tone of the hymns is a bit minor, but I want to encourage us not to make any excuses for that."

In considering how someone might feel stepping inside a church for the first time during Lent, Bishop Alex encourages us to lean into the ups and downs, experiencing the full power of the church calendar as we prepare for Easter. Just as we have joys and troubles, there is a movement of God in all that we do, especially in the stern, somber season of Lent.
