Anglicans have been proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Pittsburgh area since the English supplanted the French and planted the king’s church in 1758. Over the next several decades, Anglican congregations grew up under the distant leadership of their bishop in Philadelphia, until the Diocese of Pennsylvania was split in two, and the first convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh was held in 1865.
In the early 2000s, it became increasingly clear that, in order to remain faithful to the Holy Scriptures and the foundational doctrines of Anglicanism, we would need to part ways with The Episcopal Church. Therefore, the Diocese voted to realign with the global Gafcon movement, renaming ourselves the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh. Our then-bishop, Robert Duncan, went on to lead the formation of the Anglican Church in North America, making our diocese one of its original founding dioceses. In 2009, Duncan was elected the first archbishop of the ACNA.
